Primary

The Primary College programme at Goldfields Baptist College is based on the Western Australian Curriculum, and the Early Years Learning Framework (for Years One and Two), and is carefully tailored to meet the developmental needs of young learners, delivered from within a Christian context.

Literacy development is a key curriculum focus, with all teachers assisting in developing the skills of students in reading, writing, speaking, listening, viewing and critical thinking.

Each year level has a Reading, Writing and Spelling programme which is stimulating, contemporary and challenging, and where the individual needs of each student are met. State-of-the-art programmes are used, and proven procedures maintained.

The Early Intervention Programme identifies levels of phonological awareness in students and Intervention Programmes are put in place for students needing specific support.

Numeracy and strong fundamentals in Maths are integral to the Primary College programme. Each year level experiences a range of teaching methods in individual, small group and whole class settings, with time dedicated to investigation of topics using both concrete and abstract learning materials.

All classrooms are filled with student work that celebrates learning, findings and successes. Primary classes offer an integrated approach to the Curriculum, with lessons carefully shaped in contemplation of the age and interests of students. Special events, incursions and excursions supplement the delivery of the curriculum.

Primary children are taught by one teacher for most subjects, while specialists teach Physical Education and Arts. The involvement of additional subject-specialist teachers increases in Year Six, gently preparing students for the Secondary College environment.

Parents/carers are able to monitor their child's academic progress through the Compass Continuum.

What it's like to be a Primary student at GBC

Culture

GBC is a very warm, welcoming and supportive place. Students are each valued individually, in accordance with Imago Dei. GBC is extremely pleased to welcome a very wide demographic within the student, family and staff bodies, with students born in over 20 different countries, constituting over 30% of our student body being born overseas and over 30 different languages spoken as a primary language at home.

While we are all on a journey and growing each and every day, our students are kind to one another, celebrating each other's strengths and successes in conquering challenges. This is best captured at our sporting carnivals, when students who struggle to finish their race are cheered on by the entire student body, with everyone celebrating their victory when they reach the finish line! We do not accept unkind or hurtful behaviour at GBC, with students and staff alike standing against this kind of conduct.

Behaviour

As with all schools, some students sometimes struggle to formulate and understand their place and identity in their school and in the world. This sometimes results in behaviour or verbal interactions that can be unkind, hostile or unpleasant. At these times, students are strongly encouraged to speak to a member of staff with whom they feel comfortable, so that their concerns may be addressed.

On these occasions, GBC follows an approach that seeks to work with both the offending student and the offended student, in order to find the root cause of the offending student's behaviour, and offer them the necessary support, guidance and correction (with consequences, as appropriate);

whilst also working to support the offended student and build their resilience and capacity to respond appropriately to any other untoward behaviour they may encounter throughout their lives. Wilful injury or damage to others or College property may result in the suspension or cancellation of enrolment of the offending student.

All students are required to comply with the Student Code of Conduct, which can be found below. While the College has a behaviour management system (the Grace System) to respond to behaviour that deviates from expectations, it should be noted that the College reserves the right to suspend or cancel the enrolment of students whose behaviour, conduct or attendance do not meet College requirements.

Extra-Curricular

There is a variety of activities and clubs offered each year, which is shaped and grown, in accordance with student and staff interests
and passions. Currently, a quick 'snapshot' of what the College offers includes:

  • Prayer clubs
  • Choir
  • Sewing/Craft Club
  • Various sporting clubs
  • Crochet Club
  • Humphreys Dance week
  • In-term swimming lessons
  • Year level retreats
  • Year Six camp
  • Mother's and Father's Day breakfasts and stalls
  • Breakfast Club
  • STEM Challenges
  • Synergy Schools Solar Car Challenge

This list can, and does, change a lot as each year takes shape. If you have any clubs or interest areas that you would like to see
taken up, students can speak with the Primary Student Leadership, and parents/carers can approach their child's classroom teacher or
the Primary Team Leader to make suggestions or requests.

Assemblies

The Primary College holds fortnightly assemblies, with each class appearing on the Assembly roster, which means they are responsible for organising and hosting one assembly per semester. Each class also delivers one class item per year, with classroom teachers
communicating the date of this assembly item with families.

Pre-Primary students regularly attend Primary Assemblies and are included on the Assembly roster. Kindergarten students may occasionally attend Primary Assemblies, at the discretion of the classroom teacher, though they are not included on the Assembly roster.

 Canteen

The College canteen reinforces nutrition messages being taught in the classroom by modelling healthier food and drink choices that are tasty, interesting and affordable. This has the potential to influence food choices by students in the wider community, and help to equip students with the knowledge they need to continue to make healthy choices throughout their adult lives.

The role of the College canteen is to provide a food service to students and staff that is part of a whole-school approach that supports healthy eating, is affordable and financially sustainable.

As part of our endeavour to have a healthy school, we encourage students to reduce their intake of sugar and caffeine and, therefore, do not have soft drinks for sale at the canteen. For the same reason, students are not permitted to bring soft drinks or caffeinated drinks to school.  Students who bring soft drinks and/or highly caffeinated 'energy' drinks on-campus will have them confiscated.

Canteen orders should be placed in the boxes outside the Primary area before school, or students and parents can order from the Canteen online through Compass.  EFTPOS is available at the College Canteen.
